I lived in Recife / Brazil for many years, despite not being Brazilian, I think I have a great connection to the country so critical when I have to criticize, praise when praise and do not have to weigh the consciousness for me to be talking about good or bad the country. They do not usually speak ill of the places where I live, I accept the issues and adapt to me.

Recife is considered the ninth city in Brazil in population density, this dimension has to Recife status not so nice, that is to be among the most violent cities in Brazil.

In March 2007 a group of journalists has created a blog called PEBodyCount initiative is a controversy, but reflects well the reality of the state.

The blog has a counter where daily at 12:00 h the quantities are updated homicide of the day, the week is the year.

Today at 16:00 GMT 26/06/2009 day counter has recorded:

  • 9 deaths / day
  • 247 deaths / month
  • 2078 deaths / since 01/01/2008

To complement and draw more attention, a college Pernambuco sponsored the installation of a digital counter dead in the streets of Recife. ( Location )

Contador Digital de homicidios

Digital Counter homicide

Of the last times I was there whenever I passed the street, had the curiosity to see how many people died ... Yes, it's morbid, but unfortunately it is reality and the pernambucanos learned to live with it.

The installation of the counter is the information itself divides the blog, I asked some friends who live there, "What's felt to have a quotation of the dead who live in the city?". Some ridiculed the initiative saying it was more an act of publicity of college and an exaggeration of the journalists. Others thought it portrayed the pure and sad reality of the state is asked to installing more meters in the city.

But as Reginaldo Rossi on one of his songs. "Recife has one thousand charms. ... It is a little piece of Brazil is a tropical paradise ... "

In other posts I shall also speak of the good side of Recife.

One Response to "EP Body Count"
